The City of Paper

We aim to emphasize the historical and poetic dimensions of paper and advocate for its relevance in the contemporary context, notably through a laboratory dedicated to research on paper and papier-mâché. This new space will bring together artisans, consolidate knowledge, preserve works in history, and promote eco-design.

Just as La Manufacture de Sèvres and the International Tapestry Museum of Aubusson honor their crafts, it is time to create a new showcase for paper.

The exploration of paper's possibilities is also shaped by the participation of architects, decorators, and designers from diverse backgrounds.

Projects like the paper organ bring the performing arts to the forefront as well. With wooden lips and a paper tongue, the organ will whisper to those who listen closely. This public space can also host conferences, visiting residents, and more.

As L'Atelier d'Offard expands, we are cultivating close ties with the USA. Alongside the installation of a New York showroom featuring our atelier’s creations, we are establishing a link between France and Frontline Paper, allowing the atelier’s expertise to transform paper made by veterans.

A product of the cross-disciplinary nature of paper, Frontline Paper is an NGO offering veterans—and anyone connected to war, conflict, or public service—a chance to transform their uniform into paper.

This is not simply about forgetting or soothing memories, but about enabling genuine catharsis through paper.

Here, we seek to create a body of work to support this transformation and share it with other veterans, including those in France. Paper is the binding element in these creative processes, which we wish to explore from pulp to page.

We envision various approaches that expand the potential of paper, exploring its scale from the wall to the body, to the space itself… Beyond the sheet.

All the creative processes outlined below stem from reflections on paper as a transition, as a transformation, as a vessel for individuality within a community, and as an embodiment of memory.

Because certain artisanal trades no longer have training pathways, and to preserve the expertise of specific professionals as well as the cultural heritage of businesses, L'Atelier is committed to sharing its many skills. Whether through internships or workshops, our artisans demonstrate that it is possible to revitalize and highlight heritage collections as a source of renewal and creation.

The space also generates tourist interest, with guided tours of the workshop offering a historical journey through the constantly reinterpreted collections.

The creation of a specialized library and material archive would serve as an inspiring resource for students and enthusiasts alike.

We aim to support educational initiatives and establish both physical and digital resource centers for professionals and amateurs.

The presence of Frontline Paper, alongside the work of residents in this space, would allow for the creation of a museum space exhibiting a diverse range of artists.
