Carton Pierre

In 2014, driven by concerns for sustainability and environmental preservation, François-Xavier explored solutions for recycling paper scraps from the workshop. After years of research, he rediscovered the technique of carton-pierre, a forgotten material replaced by modern alternatives.

A Story of Craftsmanship Mastery

The craftsmanship of carton-pierre dates back to the 18th century, a period when France was at the heart of a remarkable artistic and decorative flourishing. Used in prestigious homes and iconic buildings, carton-pierre allowed for the creation of sophisticated ornaments at a lower cost, even surpassing the lightness of real stone. Although this technique was eventually supplanted by more modern methods, we chose to revive it not only for its historical roots but also for its unique properties.

Innovation and Environmental Respect

The scraps from our production are transformed into a remarkable new material, made entirely from natural products: chalk powder, paper, glue, and linseed oil. Created from the remnants of our wallpaper, this innovative material results from a fusion of tradition and modernity. Its unique technical properties make it an ecological and versatile alternative for architecture and decoration. Beyond its environmental aspect, our approach integrates ancient techniques and contemporary tools to create a balance between craftsmanship and technological innovation.

A Sustainable and Creative Solution

Carton-pierre offers a response to current concerns about sustainability and environmental impact. Its production, without cooking, reduces energy consumption and the carbon footprint, contributing to a circular economy. Its malleability during handling allows for a variety of artistic creations, while its strength when dried makes it an ideal alternative to traditional materials. Indeed, when exposed to water, it becomes as flexible as leather and, once dry, hardens like stone. This low-tech approach reintroduces an artisanal dimension into the production process while meeting contemporary standards of quality and environmental responsibility.

Carton-pierre can be molded, sculpted, and turned like wood, offering a wide range of creative possibilities. Additionally, it can be used in 3D printing and casting, allowing for the creation of complex shapes and intricate details. This technical flexibility makes carton-pierre an ideal material for a variety of decorative and artistic projects.
