The traditional block printing technique involves using engraved matrices to transfer patterns onto paper. Each carved block is dipped in ink and then pressed onto the paper to imprint the pattern, color by color. This artisanal method creates unique textures, ensuring exceptional quality and a visual depth that only traditional techniques can provide. The paints are custom-made, using natural pigments and glue.

Next comes the inking of the stamp: the paint is spread on a tray filled with water, with the movement of the water allowing for even inking. The paint is then captured by the stamp. Once inked, the stamp is carefully placed on the paper. With controlled pressure, the pigment is gently transferred onto the surface of the paper. Color after color, the pattern comes to life, revealing a complexity and depth that only this craftsmanship can offer.

A Story Rooted in French Excellence

Block printing is an art that flourished in the great French wallpaper manufactories of the 18th century. During this period, France earned an international reputation for its refined style and taste. Though industrialization gradually replaced this artisanal technique, François-Xavier Richard chose, in 1999, to preserve it. This decision is not only a tribute to our cultural heritage but also a way to safeguard the unique pictorial richness that only human intervention can create.

Tools Created by François-Xavier Richard

François-Xavier Richard, in collaboration with his father, developed and created all the tools necessary for our creative process. Their ingenuity and partnership allowed them to design unique instruments specifically suited to our needs. Thanks to this innovation, we are the only workshop in the world to master every step of production: from engraving the blocks to restoring patterns, using complex techniques like embossing, toning, and papier-mâché. This complete mastery allows us to guarantee unparalleled quality and authenticity.

Unmatched Pictorial Richness

Our block-printed patterns stand out for their unparalleled pictorial richness. The artisanal touch gives each creation the appearance of paint pressed onto the paper, where the movement of the pigment and the quality of the materials combine to create a unique depth and texture. The materials used, raw and deep, add an artistic dimension, making each piece a work of art in its own right.
